WordPress 5.1 beta 3 is out. We have another three weeks until the final version of 5.1, and I wonder how many more beta versions we will see in that time. The big feature scheduled for WordPress 5.1, the error protection function has been pushed to WordPress 5.2 instead. This beta includes some bug fixes and upgrades TinyMCE.

I really enjoyed the recent Smashing Magazine post that compares Adobe Experience Manager and WordPress from a publishing experience perspective. It is very detailed and points out some areas where WordPress could improve like a more detailed permissions system. I think those with their head down in WordPress world should take a look at what’s happening with other tools from time to time.

At PressTitan, we spend a lot of time learning about the latest in web application security, so it was nice to see the post from TorqueMag that we can show our clients. It talks about using a web application firewall and why that is a great addition to an overall security plan for your WordPress powered site.

I have talked about AMP a few times on this show, but I know there is still a lot of confusion about what AMP is and what it can do for your site. XWP’s Rob Stinson has posted an article entitled What you need to know before you AMP, and it goes over ten things you should consider before using AMP so that you can get the best results.

WordPress 5.1 Beta 2 is out. The next version of WordPress is due out in less than a month, and over 110 tickets have been closed since beta 1. The post on the WordPress.org blog doesn’t say a lot about fixes or new features, but this is shaping up to be an important release.

There is some new drama with WPML, a translation plugin that has had its customer email addresses compromised, or at least that’s what the reporting on the WP Tavern reported on Saturday. Since then, we’ve come to find out that it was likely a former employee that created and left the exploit that exposed customer information. The updated article about this whole security issue is on WP Tavern as well. If you have bought WPML or know someone that has, you should definitely read both articles.

Social Network Tabs, a WordPress plugin, was mentioned on TechCrunch the other day, but not for a positive reason. The plugin was basically proven to have a huge security issue that allowed people to gain control over the Twitter accounts of those using the plugin. I suggest reading the full article on TechCrunch if you want to understand all of the details.

I want to start today’s episode by expressing some frustration. I get my news through a few sources including Twitter, monitoring RSS feeds and more. But I often have issues due to sites either re-promoting or updating their old posts. Checking the publish date isn’t even always an easy way to tell because they’ll update the publish date. I typically figure this out when I see a comment at the end of the article from a few weeks, months or even a year ago. It can be so frustrating.

Sorry, I couldn’t get an episode out yesterday, my brother-in-law from England was visiting. But today is a new day, and we have lots of news to cover.

Tenon is an accessibility firm and it will be doing a Gutenberg accessibility audit. For more on this, I recommend reading WPTavern’s post that discusses it. I have to admit that paying over $30,000 for the audit of an open source project seems pretty hefty to me. Couldn’t the community self-organize an audit using the talents, skills and connections within the community? Also, checking accessibility on today’s Gutenberg is far different from the version that really sparked this issue. A lot of progress has been made and more probably will be made before the audit begins. It seems a bit like a waste to me.
