AI citation
model citation · generative citation
Definition
AI citation is a visible pointer from a generative answer back to a source the system used, or claims it used. The pointer may be a numbered footnote, a linked domain, a “Sources” row, or a spoken “according to.” It is the GEO equivalent of a clip: evidence that a third-party engine named a URL or a publisher while answering a person.
Engines do not cite the same way. Perplexity tends to show many links per answer. ChatGPT is choosier and sometimes answers with no URL. Claude may name an organization without a clickable source. Google AI Overviews mix linked supporting sites with unlinked synthesis. A measurement plan that only screenshots ChatGPT will undercount Perplexity and over-read Google.
How it is measured
Fix the query set, the engine, the date, and the account state (logged-in vs logged-out, memory on or off). For each run, record whether the brand is named, whether a URL is shown, which domain is shown, and whether the sentence the citation supports is actually on that page. Citation share is then brand citations divided by all citations in that query set, not “we were mentioned once.”
Example: a query set of 50 “best SOC 2 auditors for startups” prompts is run monthly on Perplexity and ChatGPT. In March, Perplexity returns 540 source slots across the set (50 answers × a variable list). The firm’s owned domain appears 22 times; two trade articles about the firm appear 15 times; competitors take the rest. ChatGPT shows sources on 18 of 50 answers and names the firm in 6. Report 22/540 and 15/540 on Perplexity, plus 6 named answers on ChatGPT. Do not average those into one “12% AI visibility” number. The surfaces are not the same instrument.
Muck Rack and other vendors have published large crawls in which most model links point at non-owned domains. PR Daily’s “What Is AI Reading?” series found journalism holding roughly a quarter of cited links across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini in three editions, with a much larger pool of other third-party sources. Those figures are study-specific. Copy them only with the date and the method.
How it differs
A backlink is a hyperlink on a web page. An AI citation is a pointer inside a generated answer and may not pass PageRank. Coverage is a published story; it becomes an AI citation only when an engine uses it. A brand mention in an answer with no source list is a mention, not a citation. Hallucinated citations look like the real thing and fail when you open the URL.
Common errors
Counting a self-prompt from the comms lead as a tracking panel. Treating every non-owned citation as a journalism win. Asking the model “did you cite us?” instead of reading the source list. Ignoring that retrieval changes week to week.
