Generative engine optimization
GEO · generative engine optimisation
Definition
Generative engine optimization is the practice of changing content and corroboration so a generative engine is more likely to mention, quote, or cite a source inside a synthesized answer. Pranjal Aggarwal, Vishvak Murahari, and colleagues formalized the term in a November 2023 arXiv paper (2311.09735), later at KDD 2024. They treated a generative engine as a system that retrieves sources and writes a response in sentences that may be backed by a subset of those sources. The win is visibility inside that response, not a rank slot.
The paper tested rewrite methods on a 10,000-query benchmark. Adding citations, quotations, and statistics beat keyword-style edits. Reported visibility gains reached about 40 percent in their experiments on deployed engines. That is a research result on specific methods and engines, not a promise that “doing GEO” lifts every brand 40 percent.
How it works
Assume the engine will retrieve a pile of pages and write from them. Make your page easy to lift: a sourced number, a named expert quote, a date, a clear entity. Then make sure independent pages say compatible facts, because many engines prefer a third-party URL to a product page. Digital PR is the off-site half. Owned methods notes are the on-site half.
Example: two bike-insurance pages compete for “is e-bike insurance required in New York.” Page A is a sales landing page with “best coverage in NYC.” Page B opens with the statute citation, a table of three boroughs, and a quote from an outside attorney, and has two news links pointing at that table. Perplexity answers with three citations; two of them are Page B and one of the news stories. Page A does not appear. The GEO work was the statute, the table, the third-party quote, and the earned links — not a prompt hack.
How it differs
SEO still cares about the ranked list and the click. AEO, in the older sense, cares about a single extractable answer. GEO cares about inclusion in a multi-source write-up. Industry blogs disagree on whether GEO swallows AEO or sits beside it. Do not pretend the acronyms are standardized. Name the surface in the KPI: ChatGPT citation, Perplexity citation, Overview link, Claude mention with no URL.
GEO is also not “write for the model, ignore humans.” The methods that scored in the paper (sources, quotes, stats) are the same ingredients a reporter uses.
Common errors
Rebranding an SEO retainer as GEO with no citation log. Stuffing pages with fake footnotes. Treating llms.txt as a ranking factor. Measuring GEO as branded-prompt screenshots from one staff account. Ignoring earned media because the work “is technical now.”
