Definition

Wikidata is the Wikimedia structured-data project: items, properties, identifiers. Knowledge panels and many NLP systems consume it. A Q-id for your organization is a public entity key you do not own but can influence through sources.

Notability and sourcing rules apply. Staff should not sockpuppet. A well-sourced item with official website, inception, and industry beats a glowing Wikipedia draft that will be deleted.

How it works

If an item exists, check labels, aliases, official website, and identifiers (ticker, LEI, ROR). Cite reliable sources on talk if you request a change. Align schema sameAs to the item URL.

Worked example

Two Q-items, one for the old name and one for the new, split your graph. A merge request with three independent sources for “also known as” is the fix. A stealth edit war is not.

How it differs

Wikipedia is the encyclopedia article. Wikidata is the structured twin. Schema on your site is your claim. The knowledge graph may use all three.

Common errors

Creating items for non-notable product SKUs. Self-sourced puff. Deleting aliases that still appear in news.
