Zero-click search
zero click · no-click search
Definition
Zero-click search is a query the engine answers on the results page so the user never visits a site. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, People Also Ask, and AI Overviews all absorb clicks that used to go to blue links. The page can still win: it is the source, it is branded in the box, or it is one of the supporting links.
Sparktoro and Similarweb have published high zero-click shares for Google; the exact percentage moves with market and year. Use current studies, not a 2019 slide.
How it works
Track impressions and clicks separately in Search Console. A query with rising impressions and falling CTR is often a zero-click surface, not a content failure. Still earn the supporting link. Brand in the snippet is a different KPI than sessions.
Worked example
“how many ounces in a cup” shows an Overview and a snippet. Your conversion table sits in the snippet, sessions drop 40%, branded searches for your calculator rise 8%. The page did work the session chart cannot see.
How it differs
AEO is the practice of becoming that on-page answer. SEO still has to index the page. GEO cares about cited synthesis, which may also be zero-click.
Common errors
Killing a page because traffic fell after an Overview. Declaring SEO dead. Only measuring clicks.
